  The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is an iconic Melbourne event with a devoted audience. • Wide Bay Australia International Airshow: 3 - 5 Jul 2009

  Come feel the noise of The Wide Bay Australia International Airshow to be held at Bundaberg Airport from 3 to 5 July. The event, held every two years, is the second largest Airshow in Australia and has become the premier aviation event for Queensland. A family entertainment show, the focus is on providing exceptional aerial performances mixed with a varied ground based program of activities. See military, general aviation and Warbird aircraft in action plus exhibitors from all areas of aviation. The event will open with a Trade Day on the 3 July followed by public performance days on the 4 and 5 July.   Six nations, seven days of hockey... this is international hockey at the highest level. SAMSUNG Hockey Champions Trophy - Women will be held from 11th -19th July at Sydney Olympic Park. As the premier women's hockey event for 2009, the tournament will feature Australia's Hockeyroos, Argentina, China, End, Germany and The Netherlands.

• Manon Lescaut - Puccini - Opera Australia: 16 Jul - 13 Aug 2009

  Manon Lescaut Thrill to the rich, dramatic voice and fiery stage presence of Cheryl Barker as she makes her role debut as Puccini's free-spirited and charismatic Manon Lescaut. There are three men in Manon's life. Her brother Lescaut tries to protect her, the wealthy Geronte offers Manon a life of luxury and the impoverished Des Grieux offers his heart. Will it be glitter or passion, comfort or happiness? Cheryl Barker is joined by an outstanding cast including Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Jorge Lopez-Yanez and Richard Alexander. Alexander Polianichko conducts Puccini's sweeping score, Roger Kirk has created the sumptuous costumes and Gale Edwards directs this deeply romantic adventure. Performed in Italian with subtitles. Running time is two hours and 50 minutes including two 20 minute intervals.

• Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race: 18 Jul 2009

  Watch a colourful fleet of yachts start their sailing adventure to Ambon, from Darwin's foreshore. The tension builds during the months leading up to this anticipated event on Darwin's sailing calendar, with an almost festival atmosphere. When the day finally arrives, large crowds gather on Darwin's fre in the brilliant dry season sunshine, and jostle for vantage points to see a colourful array of sailing vessels start their adventure to Ambon in Indonesia. With cool dry season breezes filling the spinnakers, the yachts poised on the turquoise sea starting line, the signal to race is anxiously awaited. Then with a loud crack, the race is on. The Darwin Ambon yacht Race and Rally starts at 11am. This 600 nautical mile race to the capital of the Spice Islands attracts entries from blue water sailors from Australia and the world. And again it's Selwood v Selwood as the Lions' own Troy Selwood battles brother Joel Selwood from Geelong. The Lions have entered a bold new era with Club Captain Jonathan Brown re-signing for life and the return of the 'Lion King' himself Michael Voss as Senior Coach. This is the Lions' all-out assault on the 2009 AFL flag with another genuine Gabba blockbuster.

• The Katherine and District Show Society: 17 - 19 Jul 2009

  Get caught up in the excitement and fun of a rural show. The Katherine and District Show Society is a major community event held in July each year. It includes everything from horse and cattle events to a campdraft, with a rodeo on the Sunday. Adults as well as children can enter one or more of the many classes, ranging from art and craft to cooking and needle work. There are also agriculture, picture and pet displays, a dog-jumping competition and live entertainment in the main arena. All the usual side shows and trade exhibitors offer lots to do and see for locals and visitors alike.
