  North Queensland's largest sporting event, the Townsville 400, is a three-day event combining V8 Supercar racing, music and family entertainment. The 2009 inaugural event attracted 168,000 fans to witness some of the country's best racing and a huge concert showcasing leading Australian acts.   The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is an iconic Melbourne event with a devoted audience. MIFF hosts a feast of cinematic delicacies from over 50 countries for some 17 days each winter, heavily garnished with a range of parties and special events that envelop the CBD. In addition to screening the very best in world cinema, MIFF is Australia's largest showcase of new Australian cinema and most vocal champion of both emerging and established local filmmaking talent. MIFF has a rich history, celebrating 59 years in 2010 which makes it one of the oldest film festival's in the world (one year younger than Cannes!). From its earliest days, MIFF has provided audiences with a unique window on the world and has acted as the leading intellectual and artistic catalyst in Australia's screen cultural landscape. • Mildura Writers Festival: 15-18 Jul 2010

  Held every July the Mildura Writers Festival presents three days of words, food and wine on the Murray River featuring Australian and international writers. The Festival brings together some of Australia’s best writers in an intimate, winter program of workshops, lectures and discussion forums with a large community based audience. Beginning in 1994 in Stefano de Pieri’s cellar restaurant, this event has evolved to be acclaimed to be among the finest literary festivals in the country, not only because of its literary pleasures, but also because of the talent it attracts and its atmosphere of conviviality - builng upon the provincial Victorian winter, with late night discussions around wood fires, showcasing the local and regional gourmet food and wine. With such a reputation the Festival attracts the best Australian writers including Nobel Laureates such as JM Coetze, renowned authors such as David Malouf and international stars such as Clive James.

  Territory Day is one of the most spectacular events on the festival calendar. For one day only the Territory lights up in a rainbow of rockets, bangers and Roman candles. Celebrating the anniversary that self governance was handed down to the Territory by the Commonwealth Government, Territorians and visitors alike gather for public fireworks shows. They also compete with one another to produce the most brilliant pyrotechnics display on the only day of the year where people are allowed to light fireworks. Mindil Beach in Darwin is a popular vantage point to watch the spectacular. With delicious food from the markets, people can picnic on the sand as they watch the fireworks burst and sparkle over the Timor Sea.

• Gold Coast Airport Marathon: 3-4 Jul 2010

  The Sydney International Boat Show has over 250 exhibitors displaying the latest and greatest of all things boating! In Darling Harbour you will find six halls jam-packed full of the best the marine industry has to offer as well as a spectacular, specially built marina in Cockle Bay. Jessica Watson, ‘the darling of the high seas' who, in less than eight months, has circumnavigated the world will appear at the Sydney International Boat Show to share her story with the visiting public at the Better Boating Lounge.
